At the half way point of the 2017 Digicel National Chess Championship, defending champion FIDE master Martyn Del Castilho continues to make the running as he digs in to make a staunch defense of his crown.
Del Castilho found the going tough in a topsy - turvy 6th round when he was held to a draw by the much lower rated Kemp Lynch. Del Castilho played till the bitter end, but Lynch showed great skill in defending tenaciously and holding on to a vital draw. This result kept Del Castilho in the lead with 4 and a half points from 5 games, while Lynch is in fourth with 4 points from 6 games.
Lying in second is Bryan Prescod with 4 points from 5 games as he won his latest game by default from Emar Edwards.
In third spot also on 4 points but from 6 games, is the current Under 20 champion Justin Parsons. Parsons had the result of the round when he defeated the top seed International master Terry Farley. Parsons playing the black pieces soaked up early pressure from Farley in the opening to middle game and as the battle meandered into the endgame, Farley attempted to create winning activity but fell upon his own sword and succumbed to defeat. This set back left Farley on 3 points from 4 games, with 2 games against Del Castilho and Prescod in hand.
Other results in the round saw Jerome Harewood crushing Mark Lowe, Jakeel Harewood walloping veteran Othneil Harewood and Julissa Figueroa defeating Kyle Sandiford.
Action will continue this Saturday at the Barbados Olympic Association at 4.00 p.m.
